He moved to a farm in Rappahannock County in 1993, where he currently lives. He raises cattle, pigs, poultry, and vegetables that are direct-marketed through CSA and on-farm sales. Mike and his wife Susan also own and operate Belle Meade School, Belle Meade B&B and Belle Meade Day Camp.
Mike served two terms on the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors where he learned to appreciate the need for transparency in governance and internet connectivity in rural areas. Mike currently is the Rappahannock director to the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District, where he works with state programs to protect soil and water quality. Mike is a strong advocate for clean energy, air, and water.
